We talked about how to go about beginning to analyse the data. Paula said she hoped to blog on this or create some slides but she did say to look back through her blog as she has written about it previously. Jess has also written a blog on her thoughts on data analysis.
Paula suggested taking what you have found from your interviews for example. Highlighting the important point and pick out possible quotes. She said we are looking for - similarities, differences and things that stand out. She said that possible interview findings could tie in with journal findings. Or could analyse them separately then bring them together.
She said to try out your findings and look for the meaning in them. For example, I said one thing that was coming up in interviews was that teachers said the things that students struggled with were:
-Practicing at home
- Time management
- Theory work that backs up their performance.
Even though these teachers have used different words to say so, I would say that the thing students are struggling with is to take responsibility for their home learning. So what they said ---- what I think they mean. Paula said to avoid using the words ALL or NEVER because it can be dangerous. The arguments you put forward have to be balance and show evidence.
We also talked a little about what my artefact could be. Because of what I have said about students struggling to manage their home learning I thought that I could create something that could help them. Like a home learning package. A home help guide. The guide would have to be something that would engage the student and that realistically they would use. We talked about the idea of putting this into a box - like a tool box. Paula suggests that I look at sources about designated study in drama to give myself ideas about what is out there already. She also said it would be great if I could try out these ideas in class over the next few weeks to show in my write up or presentation how this was useful to my practice.
TO DO:
- Finish interviews
- Begin data analysis
- Develop artefact ideas
- Trial ideas in class
Hi Lisa,
ReplyDeleteThanks for this write up. I found the section where you talking about 'what they said' and 'what I think they mean' really useful for me and my analysis process so far. How have you been finding the data analysis process. I sometimes feel a little bit overwhelmed by the amount of data that I have!
Thanks again,
Jess.
Hey Jess,
DeleteI emailed you back thanks for the link. I too am overwhelmed. And I am thinking of random things as I am going about my day like -' oh that links to that' - and just writing random things down - not even sure what will fit where in my final write up!
I read Mason (2002) - I have printed my the interviews I have done so far so I think I am going to start with categorising them and try to write a sample analysis to send Paula. Then maybe continue on the same theme with my own BAPP Journal. - Do we fit the literature into the same categories? That was what I was thinking?
Off to work now so back to it tomorrow I guess!!
